The enigmatic relationship between body & spirit has puzzled minds for centuries. Many have attempted to bridge the gap between the two but never crossed it. Yet, it cannot be denied that body & spirit are one.
While modern medicine has shifted its treatment to focus more on physical ailments, it is important not to forget that there exists the spirit–the intangible aspects of our being. The spirit, while unseen and untouchable, can profoundly impact our well-being.
This is best evidenced by the fact that inspirational healing through faith and spiritual growth exists.
The Body & Spirit Are One, Indivisible
The ancient wisdom of many cultures recognizes the body and spirit are interconnected. That is why there are many practices that involve keeping the spirit inside the body, so the two do not perish. This understanding transcends the modern medical model, which often treats the body as separate from the mind.
The body and spirit are not two distinct entities but rather two aspects of the same whole. When one is out of balance, the other is inevitably affected. While the idea of body and spirit may seem abstract, perhaps there is a kernel of truth to these ancient perspectives.
Research has increasingly begun to support ancient wisdom.

The field of psychoneuroimmunology investigates the intricate interplay between the mind, the nervous system, and the immune system. Investigations reveal that chronic stress, negative emotions, unresolved trauma, and other “abstract” ailments can significantly weaken the immune system, leaving the body more susceptible to illness.
Thus, the idea that unseen affects the seen, the incorporeal affects the corporeal has found some solid footing.
There is also research that has linked chronic stress, another “abstract ailment,” to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and even certain types of cancer. Positive emotions–such as gratitude, compassion, and joy–have also been documented to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being.
Healing the Body by Healing the Spirit
Broadly defined, spirituality encompasses the potential perspectives of finding a connection to something larger than oneself. To be spiritual often involves a belief in a higher power, a connection to nature, a sense of purpose, or a deep appreciation for the beauty and wonder of life.
While common sense treats spirituality as merely a means to nourish the soul–as has been discussed before–there is already a growing body of evidence to support the idea that it has a profound effect on the physical body.
